The verdict

Flagship terrain ability shrunk to fit a small yard. If your lot is under a third of an acre but steep, rooty or full of beds, this beats every 2WD budget mower. On flat, open lawns, a cheaper model will do the same job.

What we like

  • Real edge-cutting disc
  • AWD with an 80% slope rating in a compact chassis
  • Handles tight, cluttered layouts well
  • No RTK antenna to install

Watch out for

  • Edge disc height is fixed
  • Grass builds up underneath in wet conditions
  • Pricey for 0.37-acre coverage

Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD video review

Video by Anthony Barker (CarPlayLife) on YouTube. Independent creator content, shown as a reference. It is not part of our scoring.

The Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD takes flagship-class terrain ability and fits it into a mower for small yards. It climbs 80% slopes on all-wheel drive, navigates with LiDAR and cameras instead of satellites, and adds an edge disc. The catch is value: it’s a mid-range price for just 0.37 acre of coverage, so it only makes sense if your small yard is also steep, shaded or cluttered.

Who the LUBA mini 2 AWD is for (and who should skip it)

This is the mower for a quarter- to third-acre lot that defeats budget robots: a sloped front yard, a backyard full of beds and trees, narrow side passages, or zones split by steps and paths. Bob Vila named it the best robot mower for complex yards, noting that its compact size lets it squeeze through tight spaces while keeping excellent traction on steep slopes.

Skip it if your small lawn is flat and open. A 2WD model like the Segway Navimow i105N / i110N does that job for less than half the price. Skip it too if your lawn is over about a third of an acre, because the narrow deck will struggle to keep up. Bob Vila’s only con was limited coverage for the money.

The mini 2 AWD drops RTK entirely and relies on a 360° LiDAR scanner plus dual AI cameras. That makes setup simpler, with no antenna and no network RTK coverage to check, and it means trees and buildings don’t cause dropouts. TechAeris found it excelled “beneath dense tree canopies, right alongside tall privacy fences,” exactly where satellite mowers “routinely lose lock, stall, and sometimes get lost.”

TechAeris says assembly took under 15 minutes, but boundary mapping by virtual joystick takes “steady hands” to get clean edges. One quirk: the LiDAR sits in a raised dome, so TechAeris recommends trimming low-hanging branches the mower would otherwise brush. Owner reports and Notebookcheck mention occasional map-editing glitches and rare lost-position events, so install firmware updates promptly. Our setup guide has mapping tips that help with tight layouts.

Mowing performance, slopes and terrain

Terrain is where this mower earns its price. Mammotion rates it for 80% grade (about 38.7°), the same as the full-size LUBA 3, and TechAeris reported it crossing gravel paths and roots “without losing traction or digging ruts.” That’s a notable difference from bigger AWD mowers, which reviewers often fault for scuffing turf. The lighter chassis puts less force into each turn.

As always, the 80% figure assumes dry, short grass. Leave some margin on damp slopes, and measure your steepest section with the slope checker. Our slope limits explainer explains why manufacturer ratings are best-case numbers.

Coverage, cutting and edges

TechAeris described the finish as “manicured, carpet-like,” with customizable stripe patterns. The limit is speed. The main disc is just 7.8” wide, so as Notebookcheck put it, a narrow disc moving at walking pace takes hours to cover a third of an acre. That’s fine on a schedule that runs several times a week, but don’t expect it to catch up quickly after a vacation.

The 4.7” side edge disc is a genuine plus in this class. It cuts to about 2” from walls and “significantly reduces the perimeter border strip,” per TechAeris. Its height is fixed, though, so if you run the main deck short the border can look mismatched. Notebookcheck felt the edge cutter’s real-world benefit still had room for improvement. Expect to trim less, not never.

Pick the right version for your grass. The standard model cuts 0.8–2.6”, while the 1500H cuts 2.2–4.0” and suits tall fescue or St. Augustine kept at 3” or more.

App, connectivity and anti-theft

The Mammotion app is feature-rich, with zones, no-go areas, patterns, scheduling and a live camera view. TechAeris warns of a “noticeable learning curve for first-time users” because of nested mapping menus, though Bob Vila found it polished and straightforward. Anti-theft is strong for a small mower: 4G tracking (three years included), live view and a PIN lock. See our theft protection guide.

Ownership notes

  • Cleaning: TechAeris found wet clippings build up around the disc housing and omnidirectional wheels, requiring a periodic hose-down of the underside. Avoid mowing soaking grass, and see our maintenance guide.
  • Subscription: 4G is included for three years, and Mammotion hasn’t published renewal pricing.
  • Support: owner feedback on Mammotion support is mixed, so buy where returns are easy.
  • Price: mid-range tier. That’s a lot per square foot, so only pay it if you need the terrain ability.

How the LUBA mini 2 AWD compares

The Dreame A3 AWD is the most direct rival: LiDAR, AWD and an 80% rating, with up to 0.5 acre of coverage for less, especially on sale, although its obstacle avoidance trails the flagships. The Segway Navimow i2 AWD is the budget AWD option, but it’s rated for only 45% slopes and uses network RTK, so it’s weaker under trees. If edging matters more than hills, the ECOVACS GOAT O1000 LiDAR Pro has a real string trimmer for less.

Bottom line

The LUBA mini 2 AWD is the best small-yard mower for difficult terrain. It climbs like a flagship, navigates confidently under trees and in tight spaces, and leaves a narrower edge strip than most rivals. It’s expensive for its coverage, its deck is slow, and it needs regular underside cleaning in wet weather. If your lot is small but steep or cluttered, it’s worth the premium. If it’s flat and open, save your money. Prices change often, so check the current deal.

LUBA mini 2 AWD FAQ

How big a lawn can the Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD handle?
Mammotion rates the LUBA mini 2 AWD 1500 for about 16,146 sq ft, or 0.37 acre. Its 7.8-inch deck is narrow, so a lawn near that limit takes hours of mowing spread across the week. It works best on lots of a quarter to a third of an acre. For larger lawns, step up to the LUBA 3 AWD or Navimow X4.
Does the LUBA mini 2 AWD need an RTK antenna?
No. Unlike the full-size LUBA 3, the mini 2 AWD does not use RTK at all. It navigates with a 360-degree LiDAR scanner and dual AI cameras, so there is nothing to mount and no satellite coverage to worry about. TechAeris found it worked well under dense trees and beside tall privacy fences, where RTK mowers often lose their fix.
Does the LUBA mini 2 AWD cut edges?
It has a dedicated 4.7-inch side edge disc that cuts to about 2 inches from walls, which noticeably shrinks the strip you trim by hand. The edge disc height is fixed, so if you mow the main lawn short, the border can end up a different height. It reduces trimming rather than eliminating it.
Which cutting height version of the LUBA mini 2 AWD should I buy?
The standard version cuts 0.8 to 2.6 inches, which suits Bermuda, zoysia and other short-kept grasses. The 1500H cuts 2.2 to 4.0 inches, the better choice for tall fescue, St. Augustine or any lawn you keep at 3 inches or more. Check your grass type's recommended height before choosing.
