A robot mower garage is a small roofed shelter that fits over the charging dock. You don’t strictly need one, since most wire-free mowers are rated IPX5 to IP66 and built to live outdoors, but a garage cuts sun damage, keeps rain and debris off the dock and shades the battery while it charges. The best option is your brand’s official garage. If there isn’t one, a cheaper universal garage works, provided you measure the mower’s full height, LiDAR mast included, first.

This guide is research-based. We compared manufacturer product pages and the Amazon listings in our accessory database (checked October 2026). We don’t hands-on test garages.

Do robot mowers need a garage?

No, but in many yards one is a sensible add-on. Here’s what a roof actually does.

Sun and UV. Plastic shells and covers fade and get brittle after years in direct sun. Every official garage we found is marketed for sun protection first. Mammotion says its Garage mini protects against “direct sunlight and rain, helping to preserve your mower’s exterior and battery life,” and Navimow’s Garage X page lists UV resistance at the top.

Rain and debris. The mower itself handles rain, but a roof keeps water, leaves, pollen and bird droppings off the dock and its charging contacts, which are a common cause of “won’t charge” faults. One side effect: a roofed dock keeps the mower’s rain sensor dry, so on some models it may head out in drizzle it would otherwise wait out. Check your app’s rain-delay settings, and see our guide to whether robot mowers work in the rain.

Dock temperature. Lithium-ion batteries age faster when they’re hot, and a dark mower charging in full afternoon sun gets hot. Sunseeker says its S4 garage shades the dock to keep charging temperatures down, and Mammotion stresses its open-frame design for ventilation. Shade without trapping heat is the goal.

Theft visibility. A mower parked under a roof is less obvious from the street. That’s a small deterrent, not security: most garages are open-fronted and unlocked. Rely on the mower’s PIN, lift alarm and 4G tracking, covered in our robot mower theft protection guide.

Who benefits most: owners in hot, sunny states, anyone with the dock on an exposed south- or west-facing lawn, and owners of models with a lower or unpublished IP rating. The Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD is IPX4, and WORX doesn’t publish a rating for the Landroid Vision Cloud, while the Navimow i2 AWD is IP66 and needs a garage less.

Official vs universal robot mower garages

Official garages are made by the mower’s brand and sized for it. Their advantages are a known fit, a flip-up or open design so you can reach the keypad without undocking, and materials chosen not to interfere with navigation. Navimow states plainly that its Garage S causes “no blocking to signals or connectivity.” The downside is price: they usually cost more than universal garages.

Universal garages cost less and come in more materials, but you have to check the fit yourself. None of them know your mower’s height, antenna position or docking approach.

Our pick by brand, using only listings we verified on Amazon:

If you’re shopping for a mower and haven’t bought yet, the eufy E15/E18 is worth knowing about: TechRadar notes it ships with a roofed garage for the dock.

How to size a robot mower garage

Most fit problems are height problems. Robot mowers aren’t tall, but LiDAR domes, masts and antennas add inches that a spec sheet’s body height may not include.

  1. Measure the mower on its dock. Docks often tilt the mower up a little on the charging ramp. Measure from the ground to the highest point: LiDAR dome, camera housing or antenna.
  2. Add about 2 inches of clearance for the approach, since the mower may ride slightly higher as it climbs onto the contacts.
  3. Measure the dock footprint plus the mower’s length. The garage should cover the whole mower when it’s docked, with the entrance aligned to the mower’s approach path.
  4. Check interior dimensions, not outside ones. Roof overhangs and frames make outside measurements misleading.
  5. Leave the keypad and stop button reachable, or choose a flip-top or lift-off roof.

Interior heights from the universal listings we track:

Universal garageMaterialInterior / opening heightNotes
dobar Wooden GarageGlazed spruceAbout 13.8 inToo low for LiDAR masts and tall antennas
CNAINFC Fabric Garage (Large)Fabric35.5 x 29 x 17 inListing names Navimow X4, LUBA 3 and Lymow
vidaXL Galvanized Steel ShedSteel17.7 in doorDock goes inside; best for LiDAR-only models

AotoParts Steel-Frame Fabric Garage600D fabric on steel frame~24 in (29 x 30 x 24 in outer)Cheapest; includes a separate mower cover

The dobar is the most-reviewed universal garage we found, but at about 13.8 in inside it’s really for low-profile mowers. If your mower has a raised LiDAR unit, start with the NEBAIKA or the vidaXL rattan model and check against your own measurement.

Materials: polycarbonate, steel, wood or fabric

MaterialProsConsBest for
Polycarbonate / plasticLight, doesn’t rust, lets satellite and radio signals through, often translucentCan yellow over many years; light units need anchoringRTK mowers and most buyers
SteelToughest against hail, snow load and knocksBlocks GNSS and weakens Wi-Fi/4G; gets hot in sunLiDAR-only mowers in harsh weather
WoodLooks good in a garden; doesn’t block signalsNeeds periodic staining; often low inside; heavierLow-profile mowers where looks matter
FabricCheapest; packs away for winterShortest life; can sag or flap in windBudget or seasonal use

Ventilation matters whatever you pick. A sealed box in full sun can trap heat around the dock, which defeats one of the reasons to buy a garage.

Signal interference: RTK, LiDAR and 4G

The navigation type of your mower decides how picky you need to be. Our navigation explainer covers the technologies in depth.

  • RTK (satellite) mowers such as the Navimow i2 AWD, Navimow X4 or Husqvarna iQ need a clear view of the sky. A metal roof can block satellite reception while docked, and the mower may need longer to get a fix after it leaves. If you use a separate RTK antenna or reference station, keep it away from the garage roof and walls. For the i105N/i110N, Navimow sells an antenna extension kit for wall or roof mounting.
  • LiDAR and vision mowers such as the Dreame A3 AWD Pro and GOAT A LiDAR Pro don’t use satellites, so material matters less. What they need is to see their surroundings when undocking and returning. A tight, enclosed box can hide landmarks near the dock, so leave the front and sides open and remap if docking becomes unreliable.
  • Wi-Fi and 4G both weaken through metal. If your mower relies on 4G anti-theft tracking, a steel enclosure can cut its signal while it’s parked, which is exactly when a thief would strike.

Placement tips: keep the dock on level ground with a straight, clear approach of a few feet, away from downspouts and sprinklers, and in afternoon shade if you can. Our setup guide covers dock placement in detail.

DIY robot mower garage: what to get right

A homemade shelter can work as well as a bought one. The essentials:

  • Height: at least 2 inches above the tallest point of the docked mower.
  • Roof material: polycarbonate, plastic or wood for RTK mowers. No metal sheet or metal mesh over the antenna.
  • Open approach: leave the front fully open and wide enough that a slightly off-line return still clears the posts.
  • Drainage: slope the roof so water runs off away from the dock, not onto the charging contacts.
  • Anchoring: stake or screw it down. Light garages catch wind.
  • Access: a hinged or lift-off roof so you can reach the keypad, clean the contacts and lift the mower out.

Keep the build simple. A slanted roof panel on four posts does the main job.

Garages, winter and lifespan

A garage is a season-long weather shelter, not winter storage. Husqvarna recommends storing the mower, charging station and power supply indoors over winter, and most brands give similar advice because freezing can permanently damage lithium-ion batteries. Our robot mower maintenance guide has the full end-of-season routine.

During the season, a garage is one of several cheap habits that help a mower last. Shade, clean contacts and fresh blades all reduce wear, and our guide to how long robot mowers last explains where the real wear happens. While you’re ordering a garage, check whether you need replacement blades, since they’re the most frequently replaced part.

Bottom line

If your brand makes an official garage, buy that: it fits, the keypad stays reachable and the maker has thought about signals. Our picks are the Navimow Garage S for the i-series, the Dreame A3 AWD Pro Garage and the ECOVACS GOAT Garage. If there isn’t one for your mower, measure its full height first, then choose the NEBAIKA Polycarbonate Garage for most mowers or the low dobar Wooden Garage only for low-profile models. Frequently asked questions

Do robot mowers need a garage?
No. Wire-free robot mowers rated IPX5, IPX6 or IP66 are designed to sit on their dock outdoors all season. A garage is optional protection: it slows UV fading of the shell, keeps rain, leaves and bird droppings off the dock and charging contacts, and shades the battery while it charges. It matters most in hot, sunny climates and for models with a lower or unpublished IP rating.
Will a robot mower garage block GPS or RTK signals?
Official garages are designed not to; Segway Navimow, for example, says its Garage S doesn't block signals or connectivity. Metal is the problem. A steel roof over an RTK mower can block satellite reception and weaken Wi-Fi or 4G while the mower is docked. If your mower uses RTK, choose plastic, polycarbonate, wood or fabric, and keep any separate RTK antenna well clear of the roof.
How tall should a robot mower garage be?
Measure your mower's full height, including any LiDAR mast, camera bump or antenna, while it sits on the dock, then add about 2 inches of clearance. Check the interior height, not the outside dimensions. Universal garages in our list range from about 13.8 inches inside (dobar) to about 22 inches (vidaXL rattan). LiDAR flagships are the ones most likely not to fit low wooden houses.
Can I leave my robot mower in its garage over winter?
Not if you get freezing temperatures. A garage is a weather shelter, not insulated storage. Husqvarna recommends storing the mower, charging station and power supply indoors over winter, and most brands give similar advice because freezing can damage lithium-ion batteries. Clean the mower, charge it to the level your manual specifies, and keep it somewhere dry and above freezing.
Are robot mower garages worth it?
Usually, yes, if you live somewhere with strong sun or frequent storms. An official garage costs a small fraction of a mid-range robot mower's price, and it protects the plastic shell, dock and charging contacts. In a mild, shaded yard with a well-rated mower, the benefit is smaller and a simple DIY roof can do the same job.
