How we research and score robot mowers
We'd rather tell you exactly how our recommendations are made than imply something they aren't. Here's the process behind every guide, review and calculator on Robot Lawn Mower Guide.
What we do (and don't do)
Robot Lawn Mower Guide is a research-based buyer's guide. We don't run a lab, and our reviews are not hands-on tests. Instead, for every model we:
- Start from the manufacturer's spec sheet: rated area, slope, navigation stack, cutting width and height, weather rating.
- Cross-check with independent reviews from publications that do test hands-on, and note where their results differ from the marketing claims.
- Read owner reports (forums, retailer reviews, support threads) for the problems that only show up after months of use: RTK dropouts, firmware regressions, traction on wet grass, support response times.
- Flag uncertainty. When a spec can't be confirmed, or sources disagree, we say so rather than guess.
Each model page lists the sources we relied on.
How the 10-point score works
Every model gets four sub-scores, each out of 10:
- Navigation: how reliably it maps, localizes and avoids obstacles. Multi-sensor systems (RTK + LiDAR + vision) score higher than single-sensor ones, adjusted by real-world reports.
- Terrain & slopes: rated slope, drive type (AWD vs. 2WD), wheel design and how it handles wet or uneven ground.
- Coverage: rated area, cutting width, runtime and multi-zone support.
- Value: typical street price against what you get, including warranty and support.
The overall score is a weighted blend of the four, rounded to one decimal, plus small adjustments for reliability and support reputation. A 9+ is exceptional, 8–9 is a strong buy for the right yard, and under 7.5 means real compromises.
A higher score doesn't mean it's the right mower for you. A 9.0 AWD flagship is a bad buy for a flat 3,000 sq ft lawn. That's why we built the size matcher.
Prices
Prices are typical US street prices at the time of our last update and are shown as ranges because robot mowers are discounted heavily and often. Always check the current price on the retailer page.
Affiliate links and independence
Robot Lawn Mower Guide is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through our links, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Brands cannot pay for placement, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage.
Updates and corrections
We review our main buying guides at least monthly during mowing season and whenever a significant model launches. Each page shows its last-updated date. Spot an error? Tell usand we'll fix it.
