Husqvarna Automower 410 iQ / 420 iQ / 440 iQ video review

The Husqvarna Automower 410 iQ, 420 iQ and 440 iQ are the conservative choice among wire-free robot mowers. You get a brand that has built robotic mowers since 1995, a 4-year warranty, dealer service you can drive to and coverage up to 2 acres. What you give up is current navigation tech. EPOS satellite RTK needs a reference station in most yards, and radar obstacle detection trails the LiDAR and camera systems on newer rivals.
Who the Automower iQ is for (and who should skip it)
The iQ series is for buyers who value support over specs. If you want a local dealer to install it, service it and handle warranty claims, and you have a fairly open lawn of half an acre to 2 acres, Husqvarna is the safest bet in the category. GearDiary called the 420 iQ “the safe bet in robotic mowing.”
Skip it if you want the most capable navigation for the money. LiDAR and camera mowers at similar prices see more and need less installation. Skip it if your lawn edges sit on slopes, because the boundary slope limit is just 15%. And if your yard is mostly under trees, plan for some boundary wire or choose a LiDAR mower instead.
Navigation and setup
EPOS is Husqvarna’s satellite RTK system. A reference station sends position corrections to the mower, which lets it follow virtual boundaries drawn in the Automower Connect app. GearDiary notes that EPOS Cloud lets you skip the reference station where coverage exists. Where it doesn’t, installing it is “where Husqvarna makes life harder than it needs to be.” The 420 iQ doesn’t include the ground stake some competitors bundle, and the station needs its own power outlet rather than drawing from the charging dock.
Placement matters. Husqvarna’s own troubleshooting guides recommend at least 135° of clear sky, mounting the station at least 6.5 feet high, and keeping it within about 330 feet of the mower. They also warn that tree crowns within about 13 feet of a boundary can block satellite signals and stop the mower. Husqvarna dealers offer installation. If you’re doing it yourself, read our setup guide and how robot mower navigation works first.
The iQ’s unusual strength is flexibility. In sections where EPOS can’t get a good fix, it can fall back to a boundary wire. Most wire-free rivals can’t do that.
Mowing performance, slopes and terrain
The iQ models are rated for 45% slopes (about 24°) inside the work area but only 15% (about 9°) at the boundary. That second number catches people out. If your lawn ends at a bank or a sloped bed edge, the mower may not be able to mow right up to it. Ratings also assume dry, short grass. Measure with the slope checker and see our slope limits guide.
Drive is two-wheel, and owners report traction problems on damp or uneven ground, along with occasional boundary errors. Obstacle detection uses onboard radar rather than cameras or LiDAR. GearDiary says that’s where the mower trails competitors in intelligence, and owner reports mention it catching on roots. Clear toys, hoses and fallen branches before it runs.
Coverage, cutting and edges
Coverage is a strength, with a caveat. Ratings of 0.5, 1 and 2 acres apply to open, systematic layouts. Husqvarna says irregular yards get roughly half that, so a complicated 1-acre lot may need the 440 iQ rather than the 420 iQ. Use the size matcher to check.
Cutting is where Husqvarna’s experience shows. The 9.4” deck uses three pivoting razor blades, height adjusts electrically from 1” to 4”, and the mower can alternate cutting direction. Owners on Tractor Supply’s listing praise the clean, striped finish, while a common complaint is uneven coverage with no overlap setting to adjust. As with any robot mower, expect to trim along walls and fences.
App, connectivity and anti-theft
Automower Connect works over cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with firmware updates over the air. Anti-theft is mature: GPS tracking, an alarm, PIN lock and a geofence. Our theft protection guide covers extra steps for street-facing lawns.
Ownership notes
- Warranty and service: a 4-year warranty and a nationwide dealer network are the main reasons to buy. Few rivals offer in-person repairs. See how long robot mowers last.
- Extra outlet: budget for an outdoor outlet near the reference station if you don’t have one, or ask whether EPOS Cloud covers your address.
- Weather: IPX5-rated and 62 dB. It handles rain, but a garage helps in hot climates.
- Pricing: October 2026 campaign prices ran well below list. Husqvarna runs seasonal campaigns, so prices change often; check today’s price before you buy.
- Not set-and-forget: The Inspect Aspect’s 420 iQ review stressed that zone setup and app tuning take real effort up front.
How the Automower iQ compares
| Automower iQ | Navimow X3 | LUBA 3 AWD | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max area | 2 ac (440 iQ) | 2.5 ac (X390) | 1.25 ac |
| Max slope | 45% (15% at edge) | 50% | 80% |
| Navigation | EPOS RTK + radar | RTK + 3 cameras | LiDAR + RTK + vision |
| Warranty / service | 4 yr, dealers | Online/retail | Online/retail |
The Segway Navimow X3 covers more ground (2.5 acres on the X390) with camera obstacle avoidance and an app reviewers love, usually for less. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD climbs 80% slopes and handles trees with LiDAR, but lacks Husqvarna’s dealer network. If your yard is steep and you want to stay with Husqvarna, the Automower 435 iQ AWD is the AWD option. Our Husqvarna Automower vs Mammotion LUBA comparison and best robot mowers for large lawns guide go deeper.
Bottom line
Buy the Automower iQ for the support, not the specs. It’s a mature, well-built platform with a long warranty, a dealer nearby and up to 2 acres of coverage, plus a boundary-wire fallback for tricky spots. If you’re comfortable buying online and want the best navigation per dollar, the LiDAR newcomers offer more.
